Week 4

This week we were visited by Hannah Lacey, a 2015 graduate who now works with Viking FM. It was really interesting to see how she got into the industry when she graduated, as she had done some freelance work before getting a job at Viking FM. I think its a good idea to bring in successful graduates as it helps us to understand what life is like for us after university.

We have had a meeting for our show and we have decided on some of the guests we are going to use. We have decided to use Neil Jackson as he teaches the horror module in Year 2 of Media Production so he has extensive knowledge of horror. George has also mentioned interviewing Dean Lockwood on the same subject. I have started to get a basic running order together so that I can get an idea of what can be done.

In the seminars we looked into some of the running orders from different stations such as Capital and Radio 1. You can see the different types of content in each show, showing the contrast of content on each station.

Week 3

This week the lecture focused on running orders and how to set the show. I thought a good point that was made was that live sections should only run for 4 minutes maximum as people begin to start loosing interest afterwards. It was mentioned nothing should really be over 4 minutes because of this reason. Cues should be kept short and snappy and interesting enough to entice the listener to keep listening.

In the seminars we looked where radio is heading, especially the digital side. Here we discussed what is in store for radio in the future, such as more digital content and that radio one is looking to become more like Netflix.

Week 2

This week we have had a meeting for our first show, unfortunately George as our producer hasn’t shown an interest in the group and I have volunteered to take up the role of producer. This is a little bit scary for me, but I feel we have a good group and I can use the skills I learnt producing last year in this show on Siren FM. We have decided to base our show around horror in the media, as it airs just after Halloween.

Dylan delivered a lecture on our Siren shows and how they should be approached which is helpful for me as a producer. In the seminars we had to listen to both BBC Radio Lincolnshire and Lincs FM’s breakfast shows. We compared them based on their online input and their use of “visual” content.
